Threads, the popular social media platform, is testing a new feature that allows users to set a 24-hour expiration timer on their posts. Once the timer runs out, the post and all its replies will vanish, much like the Stories feature on other platforms. Developer Alessandro Paluzzi first spotted the feature earlier this summer.
The concept behind this new feature is similar to the now-defunct Fleets feature on pre-X Twitter, which allowed users to post brief content that would disappear after 24 hours. Fleets, however, didn't gain much traction among Twitter users and was eventually discontinued. Despite this, introducing disappearing Thread posts might appeal to those who frequently delete their posts. It offers a way to temporarily share thoughts without needing manual deletion.
Past experiments with auto-archiving
This new feature comes a few months after Instagram head Adam Mosseri revealed that Threads was experimenting with an auto-archiving option. This optional feature would allow users to set a date for their posts to be automatically hidden from their profile feed. However, feedback from Threads users suggested that the idea of automatic archiving could have been more appealing. As a result, the auto-archiving feature has yet to be rolled out on a larger scale.
Threads users have generally shown a preference for more control over their content. The hesitation to embrace auto-archiving may reflect a desire to curate their feeds and manage what remains visible to their followers. The platform's decision to test disappearing posts may respond to this feedback, offering an alternative way for users to manage their content without the permanence that typically comes with social media posts.
Threads reaches milestones and introduces new tools
In addition to testing disappearing posts, Threads has reached some significant milestones. At the beginning of August, the platform surpassed 200 million users, marking a significant achievement in its growth. To support its rapidly expanding user base, particularly those with large followings, Threads recently introduced a new analytics tool called Insights. This tool allows users to track their account's performance, providing valuable data on engagement, reach, and other key metrics.
Moreover, Meta, Threads' parent company, announced that a post-scheduling feature is also in the works. This upcoming tool will allow users to plan and schedule their posts in advance, offering greater flexibility in managing their content. Introducing these new tools reflects Threads' commitment to enhancing the user experience and providing more options for content management.
